Facts About Visa Law

The wave of pursuing the American Dream has swept not only the lands of the United States, but also bordering countries and even Europe to a certain degree. Why not pack all your belongings and travel over the Atlantic Ocean and then see where destiny takes you. That dream, however, without proper papers, would end at the latest with the first immigration officer. Obtaining a proper visa is a timely process of paper work, while authorization to work for non-U.S. citizens is even more complicated and deserves close attention to the immigration laws.

Facts about immigration

The federal immigration law decides who enters the U.S. as an alien, what that person’s legal rights and duties are and whether that person can at some point become a naturalized citizen. While immigration law is the nation’s gatekeeper, it decides who can enter, how long they may stay and when they must leave.

70,000 foreigners arrive daily
60,000 are tourists, business people or students
2,200 daily arrivals are immigrants or refugees
5,000 arrive illegally
About 10% of total U.S. population is foreign born

Types of visas

An alien is anybody who is not a citizen or a national of the United States and there is several types of non-citizens: Resident aliens, non-residents, immigrants, non-immigrants documented and non-documented (illegal). There are two types of visas an alien can obtain:

Non-immigrant visa: tourists and temporary business visitors
Immigrant visa: divided into 18 main categories

Immigrant visas permit the person to ultimately apply for citizenship while they can permanently stay and work in the United Sates.
